LSU 41 App. State 13

LSU won their first game of the season very easily. Of course most of Louisiana should know that by know unless you are so tuned in Hurricane updates. I was of course at the game which unearthly hot. I stayed the whole game because that is what I do. I was greatly impressed with quarterback Andrew Hatch. He was calm and comfortable in the pocket. There were no bombs thrown, but he got the job done. The one who looked bad was Jarrett Lee. He seemed scared and uncomfortable. This was just App State. What does he expect for Florida or Georgia? The star though was Charles Scott. He looked AMAZING!!! He hit the line and a few players pretty hard. Not to mention he runs pretty fast too (see first quarter). What really scared me about this year was the punting and kick game. BTW: Colt David has a foot injury. Thanks to the kid that sits next to me for that one. The punting game was bad. There were no far or high punts giving the Mountaineers great field position (props to the defense for keeping them there). The kick-offs were worse which there were a few of them. No kickoffs went passed the 15 yard line. That really won't work in the SEC with people like Auburn and Florida's return specialists. One thing I really liked was the rotation of the cornerbacks. They used four with Chris Hawkins staying in most of the time with Jai Eugne, my freshman Patrick Peterson, and Ron Brooks. They all looked pretty good. Linebackers were a huge question mark in my mind but they really impressed me as well. The Defensive Line and the Linebacker shut down the run game and that dominate QB. Overall a very good opening performance for the Tigers especially for the heat of the day.

As you know, Hurricane Gustav is making landfall tomorrow and where I live we lose power very easily. That said it might be a while before I am able to make some posts. Please keep the people in South Louisiana in your thoughts and prayers in hope that the storm does not take any lives and many homes.

The Annoucement of my Freshman

Every year pick a freshman along with my friends of who we think will make the biggest impact @ LSU. In 2006, I picked Keiland Williams. Last year I selected Terrance Tolliver. THIS YEAR IS....

Patrick Peterson!!!!! (Johnson) #7

My friends picked him as well, but of course they had to bend the rules and pick a redshirt freshman too. So that pick is ....

Phelon Jones!!!
My friend picked Stefoin Francois!!!

Game is tomorrow @ 10am now. That is so wrong in so many ways you have no idea.

Byrd says they are ready to open up can..

of whoop@$$. In ESPN.com SEC blog Byrd talks about the upcoming season, quarterback, Appalachian State, and this year compared to last year. I love him. He is one of my favorite players. He is seriously ready for Saturday!!!
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sec/0-1-258/Byrd--LSU-ready-to-open-up-some-you-know-what.html

Things That I see happening this year in College Football

- Michigan loses opener to Utah
- Ohio State Beats USC, easily
- Alabama having another okay season putting doubts in Nick Saban
- Clemson beating Alabama
- LSU winning a close game at Auburn and having only one loss, Flordia
- LSU brings back its fourth quarter come back to beat Georgia
- Georgia having at least 2 losses before November
- LSU meeting Flordia for a second time in Atlanta
- USC losing to an unranked team, again. (When I say unranked, like lower than 60)
- LSU will have a two quarterback offense (Just don't ask me who)
- Arkansas will be this year's Ole Miss
- Mississippi State will suprise someone
- Notre Dome will flop again
- Oklahoma will play Ohio State in Miami
UPDATE: - A Texas Tech player will win the Heisman.

LSU is #6 in Stewart Mandel Rankings

One of my favorite sports writer, Stewart Mandel, has power rankings every week. His release his for this week with LSU being #6. He is a AP voters as well a writer for Sports Illustrated.

5 More Players on Watch Lists

5 more players are put on watch list for major awards. Lombardi Award, which was given to Glenn Dorsey last year, is given to best interior lineman which would include defensive and offensive lines, linebackers, and tight ends. Darry Beckwith, Tyson Jackson, and Herman Johnson are all on the Lombardi Watch List. Colt David is on the watch list for the Lou Groza Award which is given to the best place kicker. Brett Helms is on the Rimington Watch list for the best senior. Ben Wikerson is the last tiger to win this award in 2004.

Quarterbacks Preview

Quarterbacks is the most diverse position, but it is also the one with least experience. Andrew Hatch is the only one to take a snap or throw the ball in a actual game. Jarrett Lee was reshirted last year making him able to learn the Gary Crowton's offense. Jordan Jefferson is the true freshman that is making people look. He is dual threat QB with great athleticism. He is the more talented and athletic quarterback which is best for the SEC,but he has only practiced with the varsity for 4 weeks. Jarrett Lee has had some back problems keeping him out of practice making Andrew Hatch look like your starter for Saturday. Andrew Hatch is a more reserved listed as a duel threat quarterback with great knowledge of Crowton's offensive. Jarrett Lee reminds me of Matt Flynn with a little more power in his throw. Jordan Jefferson is a very athletic quarterback who can scramble well. I said this before the coaches should start a different quarterback in each game so each can get the feel of the offense. No only can you see their reactions under pressure, but you will give the new defensive coordinator at Auburn a serious headache.

Projected Starters: Andrew Hatch, but don't expect to see him all season

Real Deal: Jordan Jefferson

In Sum: C as well. They diversity at quarterback could be a serious advantage, but the lack in experience will show sometimes.

Links to some stories that aren't that good

This week is going to kill me. There is so much stuff coming out it is crazy. I still haven't been able to check all of my sites.

I hate this guy. He is the same guy who said Alabama will win the west because they have the best quarterback in the country, John Parker Wilson. He is another writer on crack. He previews pretty well though. I am better.
http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/8486602/

Another person telling LSU to watch out. I think we get the point. Les Miles is a former Michigan man; he felt the sting enough. He knows his team will have to play well this Saturday.
http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/8481156/Can-Appalachian-State-stun-the-world-...-again?

LSU was picked to go to either to the Cotton Bowl or Capital One Bowl. But no one can seem to agree on who is in the BCS title game. UGH!!! PICK ONE!!!

LSU receives a bunch of Herbie Awards

Kirk Herbstriet is earning some major Brownie points with me this week. He put out (don't go to the gutter people) his annual Herbie Awards and no they are not 60 something car. LSU's players got serious praise in this year's awards. The LSU winners are listed below

Demetrius Byrd- #5 Best Receivers
Herman Johnsoon- #5 Dream Offensive Line-The Hogmollies
Richard Dickson- #4 Best Tight Ends
Tyson Jackson- #1 Defensive End- Sack Masters
Ricky Jean-Francois- #1 Defensive Tackles- not you everyday run-suffers
Chad Jones- #3 Safeties- these guys belong on a poster
Keiland Williams- What's my name- household names by the end of September
LSU Student Section- #3 Best Student Sections (Don't worry he has a good reason)
Herman Johnson, Tyson Jackson, Ricky Jean-Francois- Members of the All-uni team- What a college team should look like
Ruffino's- #4 Favorite Resturants (I know this has nothing to do with LSU,but I am an All-Louisiana Girl too.)

MIles isn't set on a Starter for QB

Coach Miles still hasn't decided on a starter for the much questionable quarterback slot. Even though it looks like Andrew Hatch will be the starter because of Jarrett Lee missing practice last week for back problems. Coach Miles says he is fine now.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/ncaa/specials/preview/2008/08/26/lsu.miles.ap/index.html

I would start a different QB each of the first 3 games. That way you could test all of them putting your front runner for Saturday. Not only would you get a view of all of them in action; you would also not give Auburn a set game plan. Their defense would not know what QB to prepare for. Just what I would do, but hey I am not the highest paid college coach in America so I will leave that one to him.

Linebacker Preview

Second to last is Linebackers. This is becasue again the serious lack of experience. Darry Beckwith is the only returning starter. He has been battling injury, but I was told by the team's doctor himself that he will be fine and ready to go. Kevin Sheppard and Jacob Cutrera are the ones who stood out. There are a bunch of redshirts and freshman that need experience. To be honest this is the position I know the least about.

Projected Starters: Kevin Sheppard, Darry Beckwith, and Jacob Cutrera

Real Deal: Jacob Cutrera

In Sum: C+ If I don't know many back-ups that should show the lack of experience here. Darry Beckwith will be a great role model.

Tolliver getting better

There is something that I do every year. I pick an incoming freshman as that class's breakout player. Two years ago I picked Keiland Williams. Last year I picked Terrance Tolliver. This year's freshman I will post later this week. Tolliver didn't play much, but he did have 19 catches for 3 TDs. The Baton Rouge Advocate spot lighten him in today's paper and it is another awesome article. Today is just a good day for writers.
http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/featured/27343114.html

It is way too early for this but...

I liked it. The Houma Courier has an article today about the possiblity of LSU in the BCS Title Game. Normally I would never post something like this, but I really enjoyed this article.
http://www.houmatoday.com/article/20080824/OPINION01/1669&title=Can_LSU_be_left_out_title_mix_

Then in the Baton Rouge Advocate has a similar article, but it is mainly about Kirk Herbstriet belief in LSU's possiblity of repeating. Yes I did say Kirk Herbstriet, the same guy who said Les Miles was leaving LSU for Michigan and prompted the "Have a Great Day" speech. After reading this, he got 2 brownie points with me. If he posts his own article on this topic, I'll let you know.

Special Teams Preview

I really struggled on deciding the bottom 3, but special teams in next. This would be higher, but like cornerback there is little experience. Colt David is the returning place kicker. LSU lost its great punter but the Tigers do have some quality back-ups. Brady Dalfrey is the only player listed as a punter, but he has not seen the field. He emerged this spring as the starter. Keiland Williams and Trindon Holliday should still return the kick-offs, but not be surprised if you see Chad Jones or Richard Murphy back there. Chad Jones returned punts last year, and I am still not sure if I like it. Chad Jones is a great special teams player for coverage and I am not not sure he is worth the risk. When he has the ball, he doesn't want to go down which could be a good thing or it can cause fumbles or injury. I would really like to see Keiland Williams returning punts similar to Skylar Green. Richard Murphy would work for me as well.

Projected Starters: Colt David, Brady Dalfrey. Williams and Holliday- Kick-offs, Jones- punts

Real Deal: Trindon Holliday

In sum: C+ The lack in experience at punter scares me and punt returns were weak last year.

Les and Defense in more rankings

Foxsports.com has seems to be making rankings of their own and no offense to them, they suck. They have Les Miles ranked as the 12th coach in the country. Even Florida fans would have put him higher than that. That is just the beginning. Sylvester Croom wasn't even on the list and some coaches with losing teams and worse seasons are in the top 20.
For their Defensive unit rankings LSU is #4 which is understandable but some of the others, I didn't even know that had a defensive cordinator. This is also the same people who said that John Parker Wilson was one of the best QB in the country and he woul led Alabama to the SEC Championship. What type of crack are these people on??

LSU has #12 offensive unit

Foxsports.com made a list of the best offensive unit with #12 being LSU. There is no explanation I just thought it was interesting. With all the media on the quarterbacks I would think we would be lower. For the whole list click the link below.
http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/8480482

Defensive Back Preview

The next preview is defensive backs. I might get some bad words putting this next but I have my reasons. Defensive backs have more depth than any other positions. The problem is lack of experience. LSU returns only 1 of the 4 DBs from last year and that one was out a few times with injury. That one is Curtis Taylor who I have always liked at Safety. Alot of the upcoming DBs have seen the field though that is why they aren't so bad off. Harry Coleman had an amazing National Championship game replacing the injured Craig Steltz. You also have the sophomore Chad Jones who had 34 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 pic as a true freshman back-up. How do you like them apples? Another safety Danny McCray has seen some plays but I strongly believe that they need to make him a Linebacker similar to Ali Highsmith. They do use him alot in nickel and dime formations which makes me feel better. For cornerbacks the race for the two starting spot is a death match. Jai Eugene and Chris Hawkins seems to be the front runners, but don't leave true freshman Patrick Johnson/Peterson out of the picture. He is amazing. Period. There is also redshirt freshman Phelon Jones (no relation to Chad) and true freshman Brandon Taylor (that is Curtis's Brother). So like I said depth is key here.

Projected Starters: Jai Eugune and Chris Hawkins with Patrick Peterson and Phelon Jones also seeing some serious playing time.

Real Deal: Patrick Peterson and Phelon Jones (again it is my blog and I can have two)

In Sum: B- mainly for the lack of true game experience, but next year LSU will have one of the best DB corps in the country. They just need the play time.

Crowton next in Power Rankings

Offensive Coordinator Gary Crowton was ranked #2 in Rivals.com lastest rankings for Offensive Coaches. "The Wizard" came to LSU last year from Oregeon.

Two Tigers make the Top 10 Breakout Candidates

Foxsports.com released a list of the top ten potential breakout players. LSU has 2. Running Back Keiland Williams is number 6. Williams was the #2 running back last year, but should get most of the carries this year. Defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois is #2. Jean-Francois is most known for last season's last 2 games because that was all he was academics eligible for the regular season. He was Defensive MVP of the National Championship Game.

Les Miles in the Power Rankings

Les Miles is the lastest Tiger on the Rivals.com Power Rankings. He is ranked the #4 coach in America. Other notable rankings the jerk Pete Carroll was #1, Nick Satan is #10, and the overrated Urban Meyer #3. Did I misspell Alabama's coach's name? How silly of me! :)

Wide Receivers/ Tight Ends Preview

Wide Receivers and Tight Ends are next on the list. The WRs are lead by Senior Demetrius Byrd who transferred just last year, but had a awesome season (Auburn and Alabama ringing any bells?). Junior Brandon LaFell has the most experience, but he went through a tough period last year when he couldn't hang on to the ball. That was a "between the ears" thing as my dad says. Then you have the Mitchells (not related). Jared Mitchell played a big part in LSU's baseball team run and hopes to have the same impact on the football field. Honestly I haven't heard much about Chris Mitchell, but if you have let me know. Then you have Terrance Tolliver and Chris Toliver (also not related, last names are a letter different). Terrance Tolliver was my freshman last year and I picked well. He is fast and has great hands, but he had problems with running out of his routes. I was told that he put on some weight which could really help against those cornerbacks. Chris Toliver is great as well (I haven't studied him yet. Sorry guys). Also expect to see Jhyryn Taylor (he is related to Curtis Taylor, brother, along with Brandon too.) LSU has one of the top Tight Ends as well, Richard Dickson is on the Mackey Watch List. Redshirt Mitch Joseph should see some time too. He was a great recruit with very good hands.

Projected Starters: Demetrius Byrd and Brandon LaFell; Richard Dickson

The Real Deal: Terrance Tolliver, Chris Toliver (It's my blog and I can have two Real Deals if i want)

In Sum: A here too. Now that I am think about it, I can't find anything wrong with this crew.

Holliday on Top Speical Teams List

Trindon Holliday is the latest Tiger on the Rivals Preview lists. He is #20 on special teams for return specialist.
http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=840429

Darry Beckwith was left out of the Linebacker list which greatly disappointed me.

Running Backs Preview

I didn't realize until this morning that I never posted this preview. Third is Running Backs/ Full Backs. LSU has the best backfield in the SEC. Keiland Williams brings the power and speed as an all-purpose back. Charles Scott will be playing like Jacob Hester this year. You will see him lining up as fullback a few time. Richard Murphy showed his stuff in the spring game. You will see him running this season. Crowton has been using Trindon Holliday as a running back for reverses to utilize his speed. Quinn Johnson is your fullback and a great one too. I personally love the short passes to him for some yardage. Last year we also saw a few wide recievers on the reverse which will keep the backfield unpredicable.

Projected Starters: Quinn Johnson and Keiland Williams, but you will see the rest.

The Real Deal: Richard Murphy

In Sum: Another A here too. I would feel a little bit better with a second full time fullback with experince though. Jacob Hester could be hard to get over, but I think these guys can pull the slack.

Peterson a True Freshman to Help

Rivals.com predicted the true freshmen that will help out major programs this year and LSU's Patrick Peterson was put on the list. Most people may remember him as Patrick Johnson. He changed his name when his parents were married. He a cornerback that hopes to make a impact with the depart of Zenon and Jackson. He was rated the #5 overall prospect of last year's recuit class.

Offensive Line Preview

The second best position is the Offensive Line. The O-Line return 4 of its 5 linemen this year. The returnees are Center Bret Helms, Herman Johnson, Ciron Black, and Lyle Hitt. Josh Dworaczyk will be the last link in the chain. They should offer great protection for whoever goes under center in 10 days. To name the backups would take forever so I will let you look it up.

Projected starters: Like I said before Bret Helms, Herman Johnson, Ciron Black, Lyle Hitt , and Josh Dworaczyk.

Real Deal: Herman Johnson

In sum: O-Line gets a A+ as well. This will be one of the best lines in the country and it comes at the right time with the lack of experience at quarterback. They will also be a big part of the running game as well.

Monday, August 18, 2008

Defensive Line Preview

Starting today I will preview a position a day for the upcoming season. The positions will go in order of the strength in my opinion. (So the best position first.) I will say my projected starters, the breakout player (The Real Deal), and give a grade for the position.

So first is the Defensive Line. I think this is the strongest position for the talent and depth here. All first string and second string for that matter could be major players in the draft. On the ends LSU has its two starters back, Tyson Jackson and 6-year Senior Kirston Pittman. Behind them is Rahim Alem and true freshmen Sidell Corley and Chancey Aghayere. Jackson and Pittman are major pass rushers. Pittman even lead the team in sacks last year. For the tackle position, the defensive MVP of the National Championship Ricky Jean-Francois returns along with Marlon Favorite, Al Woods, Charles Alexander, and Drake Nevis. That is just the upperclassmen. A bunch of these linemen can interchange between end and tackle which will keep things unpredictable.

Your starters will be: Tyson Jackson, Ricky Jean-Francois, Marlon Favorite, and Kirston Pittman.

The real deal: Drake Nevis

In sum: the D-Line gets a A+ if they can stay healthy. They should be in the nightmares of Quarterbacks and definitely give some running backs a headache.

225 Magazine features the Miles Family

The Baton Rouge based Magazine interviewed the Coach Miles, his wife Kathy, and their kids. They talk about thier family life and sports, not LSU. This is a little different side of Les Miles then we have seen. "Have a Great Day" comes to mind.

LSU has 3 of the Best Games

Rivals.com is becoming my favorite site now. The site just did a weekend planner for the most best games this season. LSU had the most with 3 games on the calendar. LSU @ Auburn, LSU @ Flordia, and LSU vs. Georgia were put on the list. If you didn't see that coming, how dare you think other wise?

http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=838980

LSU has most in Offensive Line

LSU has 3 players in the power rankings for O-line. Senior G Herman Johnson is ranked at #7 with Ciron Black placed at #12. Then the center Brett Helms is at #20. Now do you see why I am not that worried about quarterback?

Hatch in Spotlight

Havard transfer QB Andrew Hatch was in the spotlight of two major websites this week. First on the SEC Blog of ESPN.com, Chris Low tells the story of Hatch and how he ended up here. He also thinks he will the one under center. I don't think so. Tell me what you think at lsu_girl@live.com.

Foxsports Rankings

Foxsports has posted their College football rankings. Same teams in the top 3 just different order. Ohio topped the list followed by Georgia and USC (again majorly overrated). LSU was placed at six which I was happy about. But I didn't understand why they list Special Teams as a weakness and not Cornerbacks.

Rankings, Rankings, and Rankings

ESPN.com has made some preseason rankings. In the SEC Conference rankings, LSU is at #3. For overall rankings LSU is in the #9 spot.

Another rankings is LSU's QB battle was ranked #1 in position battles worth watching. The battle between Andrew Hatch vs. Jarrett Lee will be a fun one. (My money is on Jarrett Lee.)

First Day at Fall Camp

Today was the Tigers first day of fall camp. All eyes were on the quarterbacks as they practiced today. Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee did well, but true freshman Jordan Jefferson was the one to stand out by surprising Les Miles with his ability to handle the plays. WRs Chris Tolliver, Tim Molton, and DeAngelo Petterson stood out on the receiving front.

BTW: Georiga suspended another player today. This is just getting too good. Are they going to have enough players to start the season?

Stuff Part 2

I never finished all my news yesterday because it was late and I was tired.

Let's start with some bad news. Two-time commit DeAngelo Benton will not be able to report to campus. For the 2nd year in a row the wide receiver failed to meet academic requirements. I liked him too. He was going to be my transfer of the year. :(

All LSU players reported to campus for the start of camp tomorrow. All 105 players reported from what I have heard. I will try to have updates as soon as possible, but I will forwarn I have very busy week this week.

That should wrap it up for today. I'll be back tomorrow for a Fall Camp wrap up.

So Much Stuff!

I know. I know. I left for a week and forgot to tell. Sorry about that, but I come bring gifts! For the record though in that week I went to the beach, saw the Dark Knight twice (Best Movie Ever!), went shopping, and bought two new LSU shirts.

Let's start things off with the release of the Coach's Preseason Poll. LSU was ranked #6!!! I know what a difference from sports writers. To me though, the best part was that LSU received 3 votes for #1. This means 2 things: Les Miles isn't the only one who likes LSU's team and there are at least 2 coaches that are scared of us. Georgia is 1, Florida is 5, Auburn 11, Tennessee is @ 18, and Alabama received votes but didn't crack the top 25.

Georgia had two more player suspended due to arrests in alchol-rated incidents.

LSU got an other solid verbal commit. Kicker from a Kansas Jr. College, Derek Helton made his commit on Thursday.

That I can find at the moment. I have to go to bed before I fall asleep at the computer.
